Photos: The Damned at Irving Plaza 10.22.11

Irving Plaza, NYC, 10.22.11 – If you closed your eyes you might think you were in a basement club in London sometime in 1976.  If you opened them and looked around you would realize that some of the people in the venue weren’t even born yet in 1976.  For a mostly older crowd who listened to these guys back in their prime, everyone was treated to a band that sounded and performed like they still were in their prime.  With the current line-up of The Damned, including original members Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible, as well as current members Pinch, Oxy Moron, and Stu West, we were treated with Damned, Damned, Damned and The Black Album in their entirety.

Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers

Its always odd when the venue doesn’t give you the rules for the night.  After song 3, all the photographers looked at each other to get a cue.  And when no one told us to leave, we stayed for the entire first set.  Lighting was very good for an Irving Plaza show.  They have a reputation for having some of the worst lighting of all the mid-range venues in NYC.  Usually you are stuck with hazy reds and heavy blues.  But tonight we got some good light to work with.  The only issue is that Dave Vanian wears white face mak-up and black clothes so properly exposing the scene is very difficult.

  1. I should have told you that the Damned allow photographers to stay for the whole set. The Misfits too.
