The Woodlands, Dover, DE, 7.22.12 – So I went to Firefly Music Festival and all i got to do was take a hot air balloon ride with Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips. And let’s not forget J Roddy Walston of J Roddy Walston & the Business. And I also got to take some live photos, from the stage while wearing a Cowardly Lion costume from Wizard of Oz. Check out my photos of my time with Wayne Coyne at Flaming Lips, high above the crowd from Firefly Festival.
I had a lot of extra coverage planned for Firefly since shooting for Rolling Stone, coupled with the relationships I have in the business, can get you some extra access for shows like this. But I did not have anything really planned with Flaming Lips, and it probably consumed the largest chunk of my time for any band at the festival. I had mentioned to my friend Andrew Shwartz, who was down shooting for Spin, that I wanted to speak with Wayne’s manager about extra access and he told me he already had some fun stuff lined up and I should come along for the ride.
In terms of the live photos, there aren’t as many as I would normally post for a normal show, and they probably aren’t as good as I would post from a show from the pit. But I wanted the experience of being on stage and shooting the space bubble from a unique angle. It probably sounded better than it executed but I was happy I did it. And the whole day was an experience I will never forget. The photos of me in the balloon were shot by someone else who was holding my camera. All others by me.
