Terminal 5, NYC, 9.27.11 – Foster the People comes across as a band still a bit surprised with their success. They had the biggest hit of the summer, Pumped Up Kicks. They sold out 2 New York City shows back in June, but they were sold out even before their debut album hit the stores. In June they were playing The Music Hall of Williamsburg, and now they are selling out back to back nights at Terminal 5. Mark Foster, lead singer of this LA based band, even made reference to it on stage while looking up saying “we have people on 3 floors here, wow”. But this recent success obviously isn’t intimidating. They simply bring it, and their comfort level on stage is that of a band playing for 100 of their closest friends in their back yard. This is my second time covering Foster the People and I will make it a point to shoot them every time I can. Simply one the the most fun live shows happening right now and I was happy to try and capture it.
Lighting here was all over the place. The lighting matched the energy so I am okay with that. But the range was huge so you needed to pick what lighting to expose for and run with it. At any moment it could be total darkness or bright lights, especially with the flashing, swirling LEDs in the background. Without those white LEDs, the bright blues were hard to work with making getting proper skin tones difficult. These guys are all over the stage and have a ton of energy. They switch instruments mid-song so keeping up with them is a fun task. When you have 10 photographers in the pit with you, you need the skills of a running back to move through them.
