The Wellmont Theatre, Montclair, NJ, 3.2.12 – If you just heard Matt Nathanson on the radio most people would view him as solid alt rock with a pop twist that appeals to a wide range of people. Matt is easy to listen to. He has a great voice and nice catchy hooks. But if you never got a chance to see Matt live, you would be missing out. Matt Nathanson is very personable, engaging with his audience, and funny. And not Rock Star funny where he thinks he is funny and you end up laughing at him. Matt makes it look easy on stage and the crowd response to him is his proof.
Touring is support of his newest album, Modern Love, Matt mixed his own work with some great covers when he brought his “All Night Noise” tour to The Wellmont Theatre in Monclair.
This is my second time shooting Matt Nathanson in the past 6 months. My last time I covered him at Terminal 5. The stage set-up and background were pretty identical this time at The Wellmont, as was the lighting. The biggest difference was the lack of a photo pit at The Wellmont compared to Terminal 5. You never know when you walk in if there will be a photo pit. On this night, there wasn’t.
So it becomes more difficult playing with the lighting or the graphic on the background as your angles are limited since you are shooting from the sides of the theater. I chose to convert to black and white since I couldn’t get creative with the lighting shooting from the pit and would rather use the tones and contrast instead. Most of this shot at iso3200-6400 with mostly my 7D and 70-200 2.8 IS II.
