Governor’s Island, NY, 8.26.11 – With days 2 and 3 of the Dave Matthews Band Caravan already canceled, or postponed, Friday at the Caravan forged ahead on what was a beautiful day ahead of one of he worst storms in NYC. Soulive was the band that started the day for me. One that I made sure I got on the ferry for to make it in time. A true jam band with no vocalist as a member, they have spent the past 10 years touring the hell out of the country and showing that jam band means more than just one genre of music.
I was originally scheduled to shoot Saturday, but since the weekend was canceled, all photographers were moved to Friday. This gave me a chance to shoot Soulive and Citizen Cope again this year. Soulive was my first photo pass back in 2001 in Arizona. The photos were kind of terrible but I was afraid to even walk into the photo pit. My next time was the Royal Family Ball at Terminal 5. Its a set I’m proud of. Check them out in the link to past photos.
Shooting outdoors during he day never excites me. I like night time or indoors where I can use the stage lighting to give some interest to the photos. Daylight photos tend to come out “nice” whereas when dealing with stage lighting, I pull off “cool”. The strangest part of this day was the stage. This was the second stage and it was 7 feet high, even higher than the main stage. Makes it tough to shoot, or at least keep it interesting.
