Madison Square Garden, NYC, 2.28.12 – It was a day that many Van Halen didn’t think would actually come again. They’ve tried this before. Getting the band back together. Could David Lee Roth successfully come back to lead the band he fronted through some of the greatest hard rock is history? Well, for now he could. And Van Halen, with David Lee Roth at the helm, Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, and youngest member Wolfgang Van Halen on bass, looked like one big happy hard rocking family at MSG on this night. Playing the first night of 2 nights at Madison Square Garden, and touring in support of their latest release A Different Kind of Truth, Van Halen gave a sold out crowd a show they have been waiting years for.
So yeah, I am super PROUD of this set. Is it my best set? No. This was a soundboard shoot so creativity is definitely limited. Why am I so proud of it? Because it is a lesson everyone should learn, especially as a music photographer. You make do with the equipment you have. Yeah, if you have a chance to shoot the soundboard with a 400 2.8, then do it. But I didn’t. There were 10 photographers shooting from the sound board. 9 of them were shooting with at least a 300mm 2.8 IS. Most were shooting with a 400mm 2.8 IS. Me? 70-200 2.8 IS II with a Kenko 1.4x teleconvertor. Search around for other photo sets from this show, then tell me….How did I do?
