Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY, 1.20.12 – Portugal. The Man stopped over for a night of music at the Brooklyn Bowl, supporting their most recent release, In the Mountain In the Cloud. This marks the 6th studio release for Portugal. the Man in the past 6 years. There was another band churning out albums at this rate about 40 years ago…The Beatles. And on this night, Portugal. the Man, paid homage to them with 2 covers from the lads from Liverpool. The similarities end there. Portugal. The Man comes from a very different place than The Beatles. They hail from Portland, Oregon via Alaska. And another big difference is their touring schedule. Portugal. The Man has played about 800 shows in the past 6 years. And on this night, they showed a sold out Brooklyn Bowl exactly why fans have been piling in to venue across the country to catch their live show.
So the term “good lighting” can mean 2 different things. The first is when seeing a show, the second is when shooting a show. Portugal. The Man had very cool lighting if you were in the crowd watching the show. But as a photographer, the lighting wasn’t so good. We were plagued with absolutely no front lighting for this show. And it wasn’t like the venue didn’t have any. Look up at the ceiling and you see the front lights not even on. Makes it difficult as photographers to get the shots we need. Quite a few ended up in the garbage bin because there wasn’t enough light to expose anything. I shot this show at iso6400 mostly with my 5DII and 70-200. No pit so we parked up on the riser and shot through heads.
