Irving Plaza, NYC, 10.26.11 – The first time I saw, or even heard of, G Love was back when he opened for Blues Traveler at Roseland in either 1994-1995, and I was hooked. There’s nothing showy about G Love. They are the perfect “chilling out” music, like sitting by the pool on a hot Saturday summer afternoon. His most recent release was produced by the Avett Brothers and focuses much more on the blues that the hip-hop, but keeps that summer vibe.
This was a pretty straight forward shoot and one that I was probably more excited about because I like the artist then it was because it was going to be a good shoot. G Love spent the first 3 songs sitting on a stool behind a microphone with an acoustic guitar. Not much interesting you can do with that. The lighting at Irving Plaza stinks. I was fooled to think it may be good after I shot The Damned there a few days earlier. Lots of reds and blues this time. And, of course, once we left the pit the lighting got better and G Love spent some time wandering around the stage.
