Mercury Lounge, NYC, 9.19.2011 – I got a last minute call to shoot an act that one of my publicists is representing and headed out to Mercury Lounge in a hurry. Katie Herzig is someone I did not know much about before stepping foot in the door that night. I usually have enough time to check out my acts, listen to them, look at some video and get a feel for what to expect. Not this night. And sometimes that’s okay. There is something nice about a first impression being on a live stage, as long as an act excels there. Katie and her band put on a great show for a mix of loyal fans and Mercury Lounge regulars. And there is no way to describe her better than to say she is engaging.
I’ll be honest. I get a bit nervous when a label contacts me looking for photos they can use for promo pieces and it’s at Mercury Lounge. Mercury Lounge is a great place to see an artist you like, but a tough place to shoot. It is notorious for having the worst lighting in the city, its a tight space so framing properly and minimizing distractions in the background is difficult, and there is no photo pit, so you are competing with a crowd. I had to whip out the Sigma prime for this one. Thanks to whoever you pray to for f/1.4. I think I did okay given the circumstances.
This might not have been the official record release party, but it was to promote Katie’s new album coming out the following day:
