Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY, 1.25.13 – Walk the Moon, a buzz band who has just been on a roll, building momentum over the past year, played 3 sold out shows in New York City last weekend, and they brought me in to shoot them at their first show at Music Hall of Williamsburg before they played 2 nights at Bowery Ballroom.

While they hired me to shoot some live stuff and portraits, I put together a little tour diary that starts when I got there for sound check, and takes you through the end of their live show when people filed out of Music Hall of Willaimsburg with huge smiles on their faces; because that is the type of band they are.  They are a fun band, a happy band, but a band with immense talent who can kill you with harmonies and get you dancing even if you are the guy who never does.  They are infectious and their show at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg was the perfect example of a typical Walk the Moon concert.

When I was contacted by Walk the Moon to shoot for them I was extremely happy.  I have shot directly for bands but not one I love as much as these guys.  I had covered them a couple of times when they opened for Kaiser Chiefs and Fitz and the Tantrums, as well as their amazing set at Firefly Music Festival this past summer.  At Firefly, I got to spend a good amount of time with them and got to know each band member.  They are the type of guys you root for.  Talented musicians who love doing what they do and really appreciate their fans.

I was brought in to do some portrait work for them (more on that later), but I also had the chance to just hang out with my camera and capture the band from the time they loaded in their equipment to Music Hall of Williamsburg, to the end of the night.  Lighting was terrible for their live show.  There were barely any front lights, especially for the beginning of the night.  I shot at iso 12,800 and was still underexposing until I had the chance to speak with the lighting guy mid-set.  And with a band with so much energy, you need a pretty high shutter speed in order to get sharp photos.  I still hope I managed to capture their energy.

A big thanks to my assistant for the day, David Turcotte.  Not only can the man hold up a reflector, set-up lights, but he knows how to share a fish taco.
