Photos: Cage the Elephant at Orion Festival

Bader Field, Atlantic City, NJ, 6.23.2012 – When Metallica announced the line-up for Orion Music + More Festival at Bader Field in Atlantic City, some were surprised at their choice in line-up.  People assumed that Metallica’s inaugural festival would be all metal bands.  When the announcement had bands like Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, The Gaslight Anthem and Modest Mouse all on the line-up and in late-day headlining slots, some questioned this.  There definitely were bands who fell flat, and  there were bands like who simply took the stage and won over the crowd from the time they played their first note.  Click through to check out my pics from Cage the Elephant who most are still saying was the set of weekend.

There are just some bands that music photographers live for and Cage the Elephant  is one of them.  This was my second time shooting Cage the Elephant, the first time being the night before at House of Blues as a warm-up to Orion Festival.  But I have been wanting to shoot them for a while and was glad I got to do it twice in less then 24 hours.  Their energy on-stage is amazing, which makes for a more difficult shoot indoors with poor lighting.  But outdoors you have no excuses and no limits in terms of lighting.

I shot this for RollingStone.com and had some extra stage access for the last 2 songs.  Sometimes stage access sounds great and you end up with photos of people’s backsides, but I know this band and stage access is what you want.  Lead singer Matt Shultz loves to get up close and personal with the crowd and this makes for some epic photographs.

I shot this set with both my 5D Mark II and Mark III with my standard and telephoto zooms, but, to be honest, almost any camera and lens will work outdoors during the day.
